Saguaro Asphalt, a locally owned asphalt paving and maintenance company serving Southern Arizona, has announced the launch of a comprehensive community impact initiative combining environmental sustainability with neighborhood revitalization efforts across the Tucson area.

The program formalizes the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility through strategic partnerships with local organizations, sustainable paving practices, and an employee volunteer program focused on improving community infrastructure.

From Conversation to Community Action

The initiative emerged from a conversation with a local business owner who highlighted how deteriorating streets and parking lots affect entire neighborhoods, not just individual properties. The discussion reframed asphalt work as part of community health and pride rather than simply a business service.

“It’s not just our parking lot. When the streets and lots around us are falling apart, people think the whole neighborhood is neglected,” the business owner told Saguaro Asphalt leadership. “Customers avoid it, kids play less outside, and it just feels unsafe.”

The company’s first pilot project resurfaced a cracked, uneven parking lot at a Casas Adobes community center. Following completion, families reported feeling safer, foot traffic increased, and neighbors praised the improved appearance and accessibility of the space.

Sustainable Practices for Desert Conditions

Saguaro Asphalt has implemented specialized sustainable paving practices tailored to Arizona’s unique desert environment. The company now uses warm-mix asphalt, which is laid 50 to 100 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than traditional methods.

This approach reduces fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions by up to 35 percent while extending pavement lifespan. The company also incorporates recycled materials and heat-resistant binders optimized for desert conditions.

Strategic Community Partnerships

The initiative includes partnerships with local Tucson neighborhood associations like Casas Adobes Estates and business groups such as the Tucson Metro Chamber. These organizations help identify projects where deteriorating infrastructure impacts safety, accessibility, and neighborhood pride.

Saguaro Asphalt’s employee volunteer program engages crew members in hands-on community work beyond their regular commercial roles. Team members prepare community sites, handle cleanup and landscaping, guide traffic during resurfacing, and engage directly with residents to explain project benefits.

“Participating in volunteer projects has shifted our crew’s perspective from just paving to seeing themselves as community builders,” said CEO Jose Heredia Jr. “Crew members now talk about projects in terms of impact, not just asphalt, and feel a stronger connection to Tucson.”

Measurable Commitments and Goals

Heredia has committed to making community impact a core part of Saguaro Asphalt’s mission with specific benchmarks for the coming year. The company plans to complete at least 10 community-focused projects in Tucson and surrounding areas.

Additional goals include engaging 100 percent of crew members in volunteer activities at least once and tracking measurable outcomes like improved safety, accessibility, and neighborhood feedback for every project.

Project selection prioritizes areas with the greatest community need, active local engagement, high foot traffic usage, and potential for long-term impact. The approach ensures each project makes a substantial difference rather than simply addressing surface problems.

“Three years from now, success would look like Tucson neighborhoods with smoother, safer streets and parking lots that families, seniors, and local businesses can rely on every day,” Heredia said. “People would talk about their streets and lots as welcoming, safe, and vibrant, not just functional, showing that asphalt can truly strengthen community well-being.”
