What Is A Slurry Seal?

A slurry seal is an asphalt-emulsified mixture of fine aggregate, mineral filler, asphalt, and water that is applied to asphalt pavements as a surface treatment. It does not increase the structural strength of the existing pavement but can seal surface cracks and stop raveling and matrix loss. Slurry sealing can also improve skid resistance and increase water and air permeability.

What Are The Benefits Of Slurry Sealing Your Surface?

  • Protects Your Surface From Major Damages
Slurry Seal adds a protective layer to your existing surface, which helps to prevent damage to your asphalt.
  • Cost-effective
Slurry seal is a highly economical asphalt resurfacing product. With proper care and regular applications, you can save a lot of money on asphalt repairs, which would otherwise be quite costly.
  • Improves The Aesthetics Of Your Surface
If you are in charge of maintaining a commercial property, you know that the parking lot is an important aspect. An ugly, worn-down lot full of potholes or cracking pavement is not a good look for your business. Slurry sealing can make your parking lot look brand new, making customers feel safe and welcome.

How Long Does A Slurry Seal Last?

The longevity of your slurry seal is affected by the amount of traffic on your surface and the weather. The overall recommendation is that you get slurry seal reapplied every 5-7 years, on average.

Slurry Seal VS. Seal Coat

Which of these sealing alternatives is suitable for your project? Although the words ‘slurry seal’ and ‘seal coat’ are often used interchangeably as both extend the lifetime of asphalt surfaces, they are different in application. Before you decide on a paving solution, you should be aware of these differences. Choosing the right paving solution is critical to maximizing surface safety and longevity and reducing maintenance costs.

Slurry Seal:
  • Lasts on average between 8 & 10 years
  • The best option for areas with heavy traffic and ideal for airport tarmacs
  • Takes 8-10 hours to cure
  • Heavy equipment needed for application
  • Slurry seals are thicker because they include coarse mineral aggregate instead of the smaller filler particles found in seal coats.

Seal Coat:

  • Lasts on average between 3 & 5 years
  • The best option for low-traffic areas, such as driveways or parking lots
  • Takes 2-4 hours to cure
  • Can be sprayed onto the surface or applied with a squeegee
  • Liquid asphalt, fine mineral fillers, and anti-oxidation additives are mixed together to make an emulsion that is then applied to the surface.

There is no clear-cut winner between the two restoration methods. To determine whether an asphalt seal is the best choice for you, we will consider the overall condition of the pavement and the amount of traffic your surface will carry.
