If you’re getting tired of your outdated gravel driveway or are becoming concerned about the cracks or potholes in your pavement Saguaro Asphalt offers an alternative to traditional asphalt paving known as “Chip Seal,” also known as “Tar & Chip Paving.”
Chip Seal Paving is an excellent option for resurfacing asphalt, extending its life, and producing a safe driving surface. Chip sealing is often less costly than other repaving or pavement repair methods, resulting in a new surface ready for new parking lines and other markings for a fraction of the cost.
Asphalt and chip seal are both made with the same “ingredients,” however, the installation process is much different.
Fresh asphalt begins as a mixture of hot, liquid asphalt and aggregates. Aggregates are raw materials such as gravel, crushed stone, or other recycled materials. The liquid asphalt and aggregates are mixed together and spread onto an aggregate base or compacted and pressed where it needs to be laid.
Chip Seal is not mixed and is not spread over an aggregate. Chip seal starts with a thin layer of liquid asphalt that is sprayed onto preexisting pavement. Aggregates are then applied over the top of the liquid asphalt and pressed. Once dry, any loose chips can easily be swept away.
