What Is Fog Sealing?

Fog Sealing, sometimes called “fogging,” is a cost-effective treatment that can help postpone expensive asphalt overlays or replacements. While it is not a permanent solution, fog sealing can give your asphalt another 1-3 years of life.

Fogging is an application of a specially formulated asphalt emulsion, or oils, to an existing blacktop surface. This unique asphalt emulsion is heated up by a computerized distributor truck and then sprayed or misted onto the intended surface. This method is used to restore flexibility to a pre-existing asphalt surface.

Why Should I Fog Seal My Asphalt?

These days, asphalt is the most common surface on which we travel. It is a versatile, durable, and affordable surface; however, our dependence on the product means that dirty, cracked, or broken asphalt is widespread. The biggest reason you should consider investing in an asphalt fog sealer is that it can help you delay expensive reconstruction while extending the life of your existing pavement.

Benefits Of Asphalt Fog Sealing

  • Can prolong the life of your blacktop for an additional 1-3 years.
  • The most cost-effective pavement preservation treatment that can delay expensive reconstruction until necessary
  • Protects the existing asphalt from moisture that could decrease pavement life
  • Fog sealing can be used alongside chip sealing to prevent/repair chip loss.
  • Can seal hairline cracks before they become a bigger problem.
  • Quick turnaround time. Once applied, vehicles may drive on the surface 4-6 hours afterward.

Weather Requirements

Fog seal should be applied when the air temperature is above 10°C (50°F) and the pavement temperature is at least 15°C (59°F). Do not apply fog seal if there is a possibility of rain, and don’t apply it during rain. Fog seal is not recommended if the air temperature is below 10°C (50°F).

Fog seal is a cost-effective way to protect your roads from deteriorating and crack formations from moisture. It can help protect your asphalt from humidity and delay and catch cracking before it becomes a significant problem. While it is not a permanent solution and may require other treatments, fog sealing can help keep your pavement in good shape for an extra few years.
